WebMar 6, 2006 · Before the MAF is a screen of wire that is supposed to straighten the airflow or something really technical like that. It's a big restriction for airflow. If you make "similar" changes in the intake of WRX (de snorkel), you can lean the engine so that it'll blow. My Mazda RX8 did really well... Remove the screen and you introduce turbulence, which will upset the readings of the MAF. Which will in turn send false readings to the ECU.
